Final Project - Scenario:

Consider the scenario of a patient, whom as a result of a medical condition is required to visit a number of healthcare providers and institutions in order to manage his medical issues as they arise. This includes visits to his general practitioner (GP) for regular checkups, a pharmacist for managing medications, a pathologist to take blood tests, a community nurse that will make home visits when necessary, and occasionally when the patient becomes really unwell, to see the doctor at the local hospital for urgent clinical care.

Obviously there would be a large amount of health information that is generated and recorded about the patient during each encounter with the various healthcare providers.

It would be very important for these providers to share this information amongst each other in order to achieve the best possible healthcare outcomes for the patient.

Unfortunately, these providers normally maintain their own electronic healthcare records which are not shared outside their own practices or institutions.

In addition, the telephone is the predominant means of communication between these providers or institutions when exchanging health information or making any arrangements (eg. schedule visits, arrange to take blood tests) relating to the management of the patient.

For simplicity, consider the main entities providing services in the given scenario to be the:

1. GP practice
2. Pharmacy
3. Pathology
4. Community Health Service (providing nurse home visits)
5. Hospital

These entities wish to modernize their facilities by providing Web services via computer systems within the entities.

This project requires you to conduct a high-level schematic/description exercise for the given Scenario with the aim of encouraging you to think about where Web services can be utilized in the modernized healthcare scenario to facilitate information sharing between the entities.

Project Objectives:

1. Web service creation - Web services are about information exchange. The user receives a response from the Web services application as an XML. S/he can then use the XML document in whichever manner they want to. For a good project, it's best to think of a good application where you can serve useful information that a user can store as an XML document or in a database that s/he can later manipulate. The functions or subroutines that you write can then be converted into Web services with XML outputs. You will need to create SOAP and WSDL files as part of the work.
At least 2 web services are to be created by each individual student.

2. Service Modeling - Please model the Services based on Service Orientation analysis.

3. Consuming Web services - As part of the project, you will have to create a Web service ‘client' which will take the output of the services created as per the description above. Essentially, that will require you to ‘call' another student's Web services and then process the XML output.

At least 1 web service client needs to be implemented.

4. Using Realistic Data and Complex Data Structure

5. N.B. Your client must not get the output in HTML. Sending a Web page to a client's query is normal Web site interaction, such as in an e-commerce application. A Web Service is a program to program communication. We can see the output in a browser because the browser can display XML files. This is used for verification that the Web Service in question works as intended.

6. Deliverables

a. Project report - Describe your rationale and choice of the Web services you provide and how you implemented and consume the services. This should be an overview in the form of a ‘business case'. Technical details of the databases and the code are not required here. Total length of the report should not exceed the limit of five pages.

b. Installation and User guide - Include the installation guide in detail and also instructions for how to use the services and the client. Include the code only as a zipped, soft copy to be submitted through vuws. The code should also be uploaded to the virtual machine.
