Assignment Details

Background

According to the report from McKinsey institute the effective use of Big Data has the underlying benefits to transform economies and delivering a new wave of productive growth. Researchers, policy and decision makers must recognize the potential of harnessing Big Data to uncover the next wave of growth in their fields. Opportunities are always followed by challenges. On the one hand, Big Data bring many attractive opportunities. On the other hand, we are also facing a lot of challenges. Collecting and storing Big data does not create business value. Value is created only when the data is analysed and acted on. Big Data needs extraordinary techniques to efficiently process large volume of data within limited run times. (Philip Chen and Zhang, 2014). Big data analytics is a process of collecting, organizing and analysing big data to discover patterns, knowledge, and intelligence as well as other information within the big data (Sun , Zou, & Strang, 2015).

In the light of above information write a 3500 words research report on:
- Underlying benefits of Big Data and the associated challenges; illustrated with examples from different industry domains. Each group should choose any two specific industry domains for their research. (e.g. health care, global manufacturing, society administration etc.)
- The value added to each industry by the Big Data initiative from building new capabilities and facilitate decision-makers
- Big Data Analytics and current techniques and technologies to capture value from Big Data

Requirements

In this assignment, you will be required to form teams of approximately three (3) people. The findings of your research study will be presented through:
- A group research report
- Interactive presentation.

The report:

The report will take the form of a well-researched academic report of approximately 3500 words. Diagrams or tables are encouraged to be used to support your statements. The report should be well supported with appropriate references from reliable sources. You should include academic journals, books, theses, trade magazines and well-respected sources of related Internet materials that you find relevant. Please note - Wikipedia is NOT considered a reliable source to quote in an academic document of this type, without backup from other well reputed sources.

Your report should present as a collective effort, not a series of submissions by various team members. It is expected to FLOW as one document. Each team member's contribution should be clearly identified in the report, with a notation about which section he/she wrote about. Table of contents, reference list and contribution statements do not count towards the final words count. All reports must use the APA referencing style

The Presentation:

For the presentation component of this assessment, your team will focus on the following:

1. Big Data opportunities and challenges illustrated with examples from two chosen industries

2. Big data Analytics current techniques and technologies

3. The value added to each industry by the Big Data initiative

Each presentation is expected to take between 15 minutes and 20 minutes.
