Project Name: Latrobe Glider Real time departure system

Project Description:

LTLT are currently in the process of delivering a student portal. The portal is a mobile first web app that provides students with a "one stop shop" for all the information they need to support their life at Latrobe.

One of the requirements, identified during consultations with students was the need for Latrobe specific public transport information. LTU runs a free campus bus at the Bundoora campus. The bus runs to a static timetable. With the advent of relatively cheap hardware for the burgeoning "Internet of Things" market it is now possible to create a real time departure time system. Data from this system could be exposed via the student portal.

The system would operate in this manner:

Bluetooth beacons will be installed at every bus stop. A low cost wi-fi / bluetooth device - perhaps Raspberry PI will be installed on the Glider bus. When the bus is in range of a stop the onboard device will read a stop id on the Bluetooth beacon at the stop. The device will then send the id and time via wi-fi network to a server which will take the data received and interpolate bus departure times for subsequent stops. The server will expose the interpolated departure times as a JSON file via a web service. The JSON data will be consumed by a widget in the student portal. Students will be able to look at the departure times on their phone.

This project will require a number of problems to be solved. E.g what to do in areas of no wifi coverage.Designing a website to manage a metagenomic database to facilitate undergraduate research.

We propose to establish an online metagenomic database and learning resource, using high throughput sequencing of environmental DNA, primarily for multi-disciplinary undergraduate teaching. Such a database asset will be valuable for a wide range of life and molecular science-based subjects. Subject coordinators will be able to use the database for teaching a number of bioinformatic techniques including functional gene annotation and the determination of community diversity and structure. As bioinformatic analysis is conducted in silico using online tools, course delivery and assessment can be efficiently completed online.

As part of this project we require the development of a Metagenomics Website and Learning Resource.

The website design can be divided into two distinct goals - the creation of a back-end to manage data and a front-end or user interface to facilitate student access to the data, completion of course work and submission of analyses.

Website - Data Management (Back-End)

Metagenomic sequencing produces a large amount of data, which necessitates an efficient system for storage, organization and distribution. The back-end of the website will interface with a storage database to retrieve sequence data for users ensuring that unique sequences are distributed and catalogued to the user accessing the system. The website will also store submitted user data to allow subject coordinators to access the data for further analysis (e.g. subjects linked downstream in the workflow). The creation of an efficient data management system will allow further datasets to be integrated into the website and broaden the number of subjects that can use the system.

Website - User Interface (Front-End)

Students will be able to login to the database and retrieve sequence data from the relevant dataset. In addition, students will find detailed information on the background to the metagenomic data, links to online analysis tools, tutorials and practice exercises to help them complete their analyses. Academic staff involved in this project will make content for the user interface.
