Assignment

Case

Emerging Electric wishes to create a database to be used for data regarding Customers, Locations of service, and Rates applicable. After some initial analysis, it has been established that at a minimum the following entities and attributes are needed:

• Customer, with attributes Customer ID, Name, Address (Street, City, State, Zip Code), and Telephone
• Location, with attributes Location ID, Address (Street, City, State, Zip Code), and Type (values of Business or Residential)
• Rate, with attributes Rate Class and RatePerKWH

After interviews with the owners, you have come up with the following business rules:

• Customers can have one or more Locations.
• Each Location can have one or more rates, depending on the time of day.
• Customers are required to have service at least at one Location.
• Each Location is required to have at least one rate.

Deliverables

1. Draw an ERD for this situation showing entities, attributes, identifiers, and relationships with minimum and maximum cardinalities. This is the Conceptual Data Model. Examples can be found in Chapter 2 of the textbook. State any assumptions that you have made.

2. Build the Logical Relational Data Model. If many to many relationships exist in the Conceptual Data Model ERD you built above, I suggest you replace them with associative entities before mapping the ERD to a relational model.

Report Presentation

1. Report must be in a Microsoft Word document with both deliverables listed above.

2. Microsoft Word shapes can be used to build both the ERD and the Relational model diagram requested above; however, there are many more tools available. Regardless of the tool, diagrams must be pasted on the Word document.

3. Hand-drawn diagrams are not acceptable.

4. Important: start working on it immediately after day of class; you may not finish, but questions will pop up that you can then get answered in class.
