Assignment 3: XHTML and Graphical Elements

For this assignment, you will develop a 3-page website for your organization (or for one which you are familiar with) and write a 2-3 page summary paper. Assume that the organization currently does not have a website.

Tasks: Part I: Develop a Website and a Site Map

1. Research and choose at least three different types of programming languages (such as HTML, DHTML, XHTML, XML, ASP, or .NET) to be considered for the development of your website.

2. Develop a 3-page, fully developed website using a text editor to create simple HTML documents for an organization. At a minimum, the website should include:

1. One Home page named "index.html," and it should have links to all child pages within the site.

2. One About Us page named "about.html."

3. One Contact Us page named "contact.html."

4. All pages should have navigation elements that can take the user back to the Home page.

5. Evidence of the use of correct HTML tags when formatting text, tables, lists, and images within a web page.

Here is an example that could be referred to when developing the navigation structure of the website:

• CSS Navigation Bar

1. Create a site map showing the pages that will be included in the website along with the description and purpose of each page.

Part II: Develop a Summary Paper

Develop a 2-3 page summary paper and respond to the following:

1. Evaluate the three programming languages chosen by you and support your choice with rationale. Each programming language has pros and cons, and the developer must make an appropriate selection based on the needs of the organization.

2. Select one specific language to design and develop your website. Make the selection on the basis of your evaluation. You should also consider and include at least one additional program language and provide justification for why the design, purpose, and structure of your website will benefit from the language chosen by you. Support your decision with a rationale. For example, you can consider the following attributes for selecting the language:

1. Features, functionality, data collection, and navigation

2. Organizational considerations (cost, turnaround time, existing infrastructure, and the desire to meet growth needs)

3. Compatibility with various web browsers (such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome)

3. Appraise the design (layout, color scheme, length of development time, scalability, and expansion) of the website and the intended target audience. Identify the specific functions that should be created with the programming or scripting language of your choice.

4. Estimate the time or cost needed for developing the website.

Note: Refer to your readings regarding the cost of establishing cloud computing and setting up the network to run a website. Your readings should also discuss sites such as Rackspace, GoGrid, and NetDepot that could be used to obtain price comparisons based on the needs of the organization.

1. Summarize all the steps you took to develop this website.

Note: Your summary paper should rely on at least three professional sources (beyond your textbook). Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources (i.e., APA format); and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
