Advanced DBMS Assignment: NoSQL and Big Data Analyses

Overview

This assignment has two parts. The first part requires you to think about the data needed by the Neo4j graph-based NoSQL database. The second requires you to think carefully about the big data techniques you are learning and how they might apply in a business situation. To do this you are to find an example of descriptive and predictive analytics on the Internet and briefly summarize how it provides value to the business or organization. This means taking on a management or information user perspective that values information that aids decisions making, while discounting data that does not aid decision making. Then find an example of either Cognitive Computing, Entity Analytics, or Social media analytics and briefly describe how it provides value in that business situation. Finally, identify a business situation where you could apply both of these analytics techniques to provide high value information.

1) Recall the interface of Graph-based NOSQL system by Neo4J from assignment 4.  You also might review the information at the following link related to graph-based NOSQL concepts.

a) Review the ER model, in PDF file below, proposed for Neo4j to implement the interface. Is this model sufficient for providing all the data needed to support the interface? (yes or no) If yes, describe how the data for an actor acting in a movie would be stored. If no, describe how the model is deficient using data for an actor acting in a movie (your response should be about 1 page).

b) Review the following simplified ER model of the data model proposed for Neo4j to implement the interface. Is this model sufficient for providing all the data needed to support the interface? (yes or no) If yes, describe how the data for an actor acting in a movie would be stored. If no, describe how the model is deficient using data for an actor acting in a movie (your response should be about 1 page).

c) Compare the simplified ER model to the first ER model. Does the simplified model implement all of the capabilities of the first model? (yes or no) If yes, describe how the property values for an actor acting in a movie would be stored differently in the two databases. If no, describe how the model is deficient using data for an actor acting in a movie (your response should be about 1 page).

2) Bank Fraud Neo4j Example. For this part of the assignment you are to review the Neo4j example of a bank fraud database.

a) Explain the key elements in the Bank Fraud Graph Data Model in about 1 paragraph.

b) Create a neo4j database for the Sample Data Set. Note: you may need to go to full screen mode and stretch the model see all of the data to include. Submit a screenshot of the graph of the data from your system.

c) Execute the "Entity Link Analysis Query" on your database. Submit a screenshot of the results.

d) Execute the "Determine the financial risk of a possible fraud" Query on your database. Submit a screenshot of the results.

3) This part of the assignment involves thinking about how analytics are useful from a practical business perspective. The first step is to reread pages 911-916 of E&N and briefly review the IBM book on using Data Analytics Across the Enterprise.

Finally, (this is the hard part) identify a business situation where you could apply both of these analytics techniques to provide high value information.

 a) Find an example of descriptive and predictive analytics on the Internet. Briefly summarize how it provides value to the business or organization. This means taking on a management or information user perspective that values information that aids decisions making, while discounting data that does not aid decision making. Be sure that your response address the Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value characteristics of big data. (your response should be about 2 pages).

b) Find an example of one of the following types of analytics: Cognitive Computing, Entity Analytics, or Social Media Analytics on the Internet. Briefly summarize how it provides value to the business or organization. This means taking on a management or information user perspective that values information that aids decisions making, while discounting data that does not aid decision making. Be sure that your response address the Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value characteristics of big data. (your response should be about 2 pages).

c) Given the results of your research about the value of the two data analytics techniques, identify/imagine/create a business situation were both techniques could be applied together to achieve business value. Be sure that your response address the Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value characteristics of big data. (your response should be about 2 pages).
