a) What type of message does the frame carry in its payload?

QUESTION 2:

1. Someone wants to transmit a file that is exactly 4.5 MB in size in an extended local area network which operates at 100 Mbps. How many frames will be needed? Note: The network has 2 switches, 1 hub and 1 bridge.

2. Someone accidentally changes the physical address of the workstation that he uses. This means there would be two devices with the same physical address in the above-mentioned LAN. Is this possible? What problems could arise?

QUESTION 3:

We have two local area networks. The first LAN is a 100BaseT Ethernet network that uses a hub as the central interconnecting device. The second LAN is a Token-ring network that operates at 70 Mbps. Each LAN has 100 computers connected to it.

1. Which network performs better? (The answer should not exceed 100 words)

2. Which LAN is fairer? In other words, which network offers fair opportunity to the users to access it? (The answer should not exceed 130 words)

QUESTION 4:

A company owns three buildings each of which has local area network installed. The management wishes to connect the three buildings together into a company-wide metropolitan area network. Since they are concerned with security, they do not wish to utilize the Internet for the interconnections. Instead, they will use leased lines which are, however, costly.

You have been asked to consult the management of the company regarding the bandwidth that would be required for the company's metropolitan area network. In order to accomplish this task, you have to conduct a user requirements survey and then, based on the answers, you would be able to perform a traffic analysis and determine an efficient bandwidth allocation. The MAN will be used solely for the company's operations and exchange of specific data through forms, invoices etc.

Your task is to make a thorough list of questions that you would ask in the user requirements survey in order to achieve the task of determining the bandwidth requirements. Note that the exercise does not ask you to actually determine bandwidth levels but to identify what information you need to have in order to be able to determine it. Provide a brief justification for each question that you include but avoid repetitions. Clearly state any assumptions that you make.
