Required Tools and Equipment: The patch cable you made, an additional patch cable, the patch panel and RJ-45 jack to which you terminated the cable, a lab computer, and a switch Description: Working in groups of at least two, connect a lab computer, using the patch cable you made, to the RJ-45 jack you punched down. Using an additional patch cable, connect the patch panel to a switch. Then you use the ping command to verify connectivity between computers.

1. Using the patch cable you made in Hands-On Project, connect your lab computer's NIC to the RJ-45 jack you punched down in Hands-On Project.

2. Using the additional patch cable, connect the port on the patch panel you punched down to a switch.

3. Turn on the PC and the switch, if necessary.

4. Verify that you have a link light at the switch and at your lab computer's NIC. Log on to your computer, and give your computer's IP address to another student who's connected to the switch.

5. Ping another student's computer after getting his or her IP address. If the ping is successful, your cable termination was a success.

6. If you're sharing computers, allow the next group of students to test their cabling.

7. Shut down your computer if no one else is using it for testing.
