Objectives

The two main objectives of this assignment are:
1. To implement the skills and knowledge gained through the course.
2. To achieve greater awareness of the ways in which networks are used by organisations.

Context

This assignment involves PREPARATION OF A REPORT. The report relates to the Scenario given below.

Aim:

You have been asked to present a proposal for an Internet/Intranet solution for a college. The college is especially interested in the promised efficiency gains to be found from new ways of working online, and the possibilities for cost savings (e.g. less printed material distribution, allow staff to work more efficiently, and students can access course material anywhere at any time). You will research how an Internet/Intranet can best be implemented for the college. You have been asked to report back to the person in charge of ICT of the college within 4 weeks with the plan of the Internet/Intranet.

The aim of this assignment is to report on your research and give recommendations on how the college should implement the Internet/Intranet, outlining the benefits and risks of each option. You are expected to focus on the following main areas:

1. Content

o What should be the content of the Internet/Intranet?
o How should the contents be organised?
o Who within the organisation will have responsibility for each type of content?

o Who will be allowed access to each type of content?

2. Maintenance

o How often will each type of information be updated?
o Who would be responsible to update the information?
o How will you ensure it is up to date (manually or automatically)?

3. Standards and procedures

o Who would be responsible for each type of content?
o Are there any security, privacy or copyright issues for any of the types of information?

Content/Organization

o List the content/services that you propose to be included in the Internet and Intranet.
o Indicate how these will be organized into sections. Present this as an organization chart.
o Create a bulleted list with a brief description of each content/service.

Choice of OS and Web Server Software

Discuss the relevant features, advantages and disadvantages of the major server operating systems and web server software and the reasons for your choices.

Access Restrictions, Maintenance, and Security/Privacy/Copyright issues

There should be a summary of each of these, but it should also be cross-referenced to the list of contents, i.e. every piece of content should be labeled with:
o The staff member(s) responsible for the initial content
o The groups who can view the content (public/all staff/administrators etc.)
o The person(s) who can add to the content (public/all staff/administrators etc.)
o The frequency of update
o Any security/privacy/copyright issues

The Organisation:

Details of the organisation are given below. You can make up any details of the college that do not contradict the details already provided.

Eastern Bay College

Eastern Bay College is one of New Zealand's newest high schools for year 7 to year 13 students with boarding options. The school vision is "to prepare each student to leave college well grounded and ready to participate in a complex and changing world". Eastern Bay College employs 120 full time staff and there are approximately 1200 students enrolled.

Out of a total of 120 staff, 15 staff are responsible for administration, human resource, finance, accounting, payroll, course curriculum, pastoral care, and marketing.

Currently, all learning materials are printed and distributed to students during class hour. Due to budget constraints, the college is considering minimizing the paper and printing cost by making learning material available online with appropriate access restrictions.

The college is also considering making college brochures and newsletters available on the Internet. At present all newsletters are being sent to parents via email causing a major issue with Internet bandwidth due to a large amount of emails with large attachments being sent out. The brochures and newsletters will be available to the public.
