1. Find one recent (last six months) peer-reviewed paper on malware hiding and/or spreading. The paper should be at least 6 pages long. Write a one to two page summary, pointing out the following:
a. what threat or problem is being discussed
b. what was "new" in this paper - what made it significant, or what was its contribution to the field.
c. what practical application is there for the information presented in the paper.
2. Answer the following questions not related to the paper but possibly in the document
a. list one way to prevent malware from executing in Windows from directories that are not normally used for executables (such as "My Documents" or "Application Data"). What are the risks of implementing this technique?
b. You see a recycle bin on a FAT-32 flash drive. What is wrong with this picture and what could it mean?
c. Google the phrase "usb drive icon looks like folder" and tell me what happened to make the icon look like a folder.
d. Related to (c), fix the problem for the malware author. (In other words, find out why it looked like a folder and correct it. There are two ways to do this - pick one.)
3. Read up on Cryptolocker and give me your honest opinion about its design. What do you think they could have done better?
