Part -1:

Assignment: Creating a Presentation

Use the Open/LibreOffice Impress application to create a series of slides which would support the presentation of the material in the paper. You may use backgrounds and/or templates however you choose.

The presentation will be short - between five and ten minutes is all you will be permitted. You should count on spending thirty to forty seconds on each slide, so plan for six to ten slides of material.

As you are formatting your material, remember the purposes that a presentation must serve. One of the uses for slides is to remind the presenter of the information he/she wishes to discuss. It is difficult to remember everything while standing in front of an audience; your presentation slides should carry enough information to help you recover if you lose track of important thoughts. Another purpose of the slides is to reinforce what you are saying. They should be kept sparse, so that readers are not distracted from your presentation, but not too sparse, since the visual aids should reinforce what they are hearing. Finally, presentations frequently are used in lieu of note-taking, so your slides should contain enough material that listeners will be able to recall the information when reviewing the slides in the future.

When you are finished, save the file in the default OpenDocument format, then email the file to your instructor.

Part -2:

Purpose: To investigate the usefulness of Linux office applications.

NOTE: These instructions were written with reference to version 12.04LTS of Ubuntu.

1. Boot your system.

2. Close all of the windows open on your desktop. Click on the Applications menu, select Office, and view the list of applications made available to you there.

3. Identify the purpose of the following applications:

Application Name                    Category of Application                       Microsoft Office Equivalent

Base                                    ____________________________________________________

Calc                                     ____________________________________________________

Impress                                ____________________________________________________

Writer                                  ____________________________________________________

4. Now open the Writer application and begin to enter an outline. Type the Roman numeral one (an I), then a period, then the name of the first entry in your outline. If you need help thinking of something to outline, try outlining a typical day. For major topics, use Early Morning, Morning, Noon, Afternoon, Evening, and Night. Include subtopics to describe your activities at each of those times.
NOTE: The LibreOffice Writer should attempt to format your outline automatically.

5. As you enter your outline, you should encounter some of the formatting features of LibreOffice Writer. Explore those features, then try to find equivalents to the tools you might use in MS Word. Do you find a Thesaurus? Spell checking? Word counting? Styles? Auto-correction? Automatic table formatting?

6. Though these features can be useful, some people find them irritating. Can you figure out how to turn off those features in LibreOffice?

7. Outside of class, spend some time working with MS Word, searching for the features of that application. Provide a brief comparison of LibreOffice Writer and MS Word, identifying any features that one or the other lacks, and comparing the ease of use of the two applications.

Part -3:

What other alternative to MS Office available today? (Not including Libre/OpenOffice.) What are the advantages and disadvantages of remaining with MS Office?

Can You please put the answer with the question and please use the worksheet
