Digital Video: Digital video is a form of video recording system which works through using a digital, quite than analog, representation of the video signal. It generic means, not to be confused along with the identity DV that is an exact type of digital video. Digital video is most frequently recorded on tape and then distributed on optical discs, generally DVDs. There are exceptions, as camcorders which record directly to DVDs Digital-8 camcorders that encode digital video upon conventional analog tapes and the most current JVC Everio G camcorders that record digital video on hard disks.

Digital video is not as regular analogue video used through daily televisions. To know how digital video works this is best to believe of this as a sequence of non-interlaced images, all of that is a two-dimensional frame of picture parts or pixels. Current analogue television systems as:

  • The NTSC that is National Television Standards Committee, utilized in North America and Japan
  • PAL that is Phase Alternate Line, utilized in Western Europe, employ line interlacing. Systems which use line interlacing alternately scan odd and even lines of the video that can produce images while analogue video is digitized.

In matter of Digital video, there are two terms related with all pixels, luminance and chrominance. A luminance is a value i.e. proportional to the pixel's intensity. The chrominance is a value which represents the colour of the pixel and a number of representations are there to decide from. Any colour can be synthesized through a suitable mixture of three correctly selected primary colours. So RGB that is Red, Green and Blue, are usually selected for the primary colours.

While an analogue signal is digitized, this is quantized. Quantization is the process through such a continuous range of values from an input signal is divided into non- overlapping discrete ranges and all range allocated a unique symbol. A digitized monochrome photograph may, for illustration, contain merely 256 various kinds of pixel. That image would be as to have a pixel depth of 8 bits. The higher quality image may be quantized permitting 24 bits per pixel.
