Assignment 1:

Project Builder

As the newest member of the Game Corporation design team, you have noticed that some of your fellow designers perform many repetitive tasks and could really benefit from using actions. One of these repetitive tasks is taking a single-layer image, converting a layer from a Background layer to an image layer, and creating a new layer. You want to make their lives easier, so you decide to create an action that completes this task. To circulate the action among your coworkers, you decide to create a droplet for this action that you can e-mail or post to the network. (Hint: There are a variety of steps in a varied sequence you can take to create this action.)

1. Open PS 16-3.psd, then save it as New Layers.

2. Create a snapshot of the current image using the default name.

3. Hide any other displayed action details you may find distracting (if necessary).

4. Write down the steps you will need to perform to create this action. (You can use a word processor or a sheet of paper, or you can use the Notes panel in Photoshop.)

5. Create a new action in the Default Actions set called New Layers.

6. Apply the Violet color to the action.

7. Record the necessary steps to complete the action.

8. Use the snapshot to return the image to its original condition.

9. Play the action to verify that it works as you expected.

10. If the action does not perform as expected, make any necessary modifications to it.

11. Save your work, then compare your screen and Actions panel to the sample in Figure 32. (Your steps may differ.)

12. Create a droplet for the action named New Layers, then save it in the drive and folder where you store your Data Files.

13. Zip and submit your completed assignment to your instructor.

Assignment 2:

Learn about web features.

1. Start Photoshop, open PS 17-3.psd from the drive and folder where you store your Data Files, then save it as Optimal Dolphin.

2. Set the background and foreground colors to their default values.

3. Fit the image on the screen.

Optimize images for web use.

1. Open the Save For Web dialog box.

2. Display the 4-Up tab, then reposition it or zoom in or out of the image (if necessary).

3. Verify the settings of the image to the right of the original image as GIF 64 Dithered.

4. Save the file as Optimal-Dolphin.gif to the drive and folder where you store your Data Files.

5. Open the Save For Web dialog box, click the first GIF image after the original image, change the settings to JPEG High, then compare your image to Figure 19.

6. Use the Save button to save the file as Optimal-Dolphin.jpg.

7. Close Optimal Dolphin without saving changes.

Create a button for a web page.

1. Open PS 17-4.psd, then save it as Canine-Nation.

2. If prompted, update the text layers.

3. Set the background and foreground colors to the default.

4. Fit the image on the screen, and display the rulers, guides, and slices (if necessary).

5. Select the Rounded Rectangle tool.

6. Activate the Board layer, then add a new layer.

7. Use the guides to help you draw a shape from 15 X/340 Y to 135 X/390 Y, then select the Woodgrain style. (The Woodgrain style is in the Buttons styles set.)

8. Select the Type tool.

9. Click the image within the button, type Rescue (use a White, Arial Regular Bold font of appropriate size), then center the text within the button.

10. Save your work.

Create slices in an image.

1. Draw a slice for the Train button from 15 X/150 Y to 135 X/200 Y.

2. Draw a slice for the Groom button from 15 X/210 Y to 135 X/260 Y.

3. Draw a slice for the Board button from 15 X/275 Y to 135 X/325 Y.

4. Draw a slice for the Rescue button from 15 X/340 Y to 135 X/390 Y.

5. Resize the Jack Russell slice (the image of the dog in the top-right portion of the image) so that the top is at 90 Y and the bottom is at 320 Y.

6. Type the following (fictitious) URL for the Jack Russell slice, www.caninenation.com/jackrussell_faq.html, then click OK.

7. Hide the slices and rulers.

8. Save your work, compare your image to Figure 20, then close Canine-Nation.

9. Zip and submit your completed assignment to your instructor.
