Vibration Monitoring of Centrifugal Blower Set-up - Misalignment, Looseness, and Unbalance

Aim and objectives

1.1 Aim:

The aim of this experiment is to conduct vibration monitoring of centrifugal Blower set-up and capture and analyse the different waveforms in time-domain and frequency domain associated with the following faults such as misalignment of shafts, looseness and unbalance of fan impeller.

The set-up uses accelerometer sensor, data acquisition unit DAQ, LABVIEW software to display the waveforms.

1.2 Objectives:

- To run the centrifugal blower set-up and capture vibration signals and and waveforms

- To simulate misalignment, looseness and unbalance fault in the machine and take the vibration signals or waveforms

- To identify the specific signature of misalignment, looseness and Unbalance fault in the FFT spectrum

Theoretical background

Vibration Monitoring is generally the key component of most condition monitoring techniques. Almost all machine vibrate, and the link between these vibrations and the machine condition is both easily measured, and the results easily interpreted.

Vibration Monitoring reveals 70 - 80% of the mechanical problems associated with the machine. It is normally applied by using transducers to measure, acceleration, velocity, or displacement. The choice of these depends on the frequency of the vibration, acceleration: 0-20 kHz, velocity: 2Hz to 2kHz, displacement: 0-200Hz. There are various techniques of Vibration Monitoring. Time Domain method -Overall readings raw signal from the transducer circuitry (sensor) and obtaining the peak, peak-to-peak or RMS values of the signal. Using standard charts, the condition of the machine can be assessed. Frequency Domain method -Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)

A technique of changing time domain signal (original signal) into frequency domain (spectrum) where frequency information would be presented and this method supports in determining location of faults. Time-Frequency Domain Method-Wavelet Transform.

A powerful multi-resolution method that both time and frequency information are presented where a small wave known as mother wavelet function used using parameters of scaling and shifting .

3.2 Procedure
- Turn the electrical switch for the panel of the centrifugal blower as shown.
- From the control panel, turn ON motor and and speed control.
- Be sure that there are no tools or any obstruction in the machine before turning ON.
- Turn on the Data Acquisition Unit DAQ and the computer
- Open the LABVIEW software in the computer
- Position the accelerometer in the bearing housing as shown in the figure
- Be sure that the cable of the accelerometer in safe from the turning shaft and coupling
- Take a reading in time and frequency domain.
