ENGINE ROOM CRANE

A new vessel is being designed to provide a container service between two atlantic ports. The owner has decided on the vessels main engine but the engine room dimensions and scantlings have yet to be determined. General containerised nautical service is a company who specialise in the movement of containerised cargo from Europe to north America( this gives us a understanding that it is a container vessel travelling in cold countries). A crane is required to assist in maintenance of the main engine, lifting all heavy parts to an area under in skylight where they can be removed from the engineroom and to allow for machinery items to be overhauled. The main engine is MAN 8S70MC-C8.

You are to supply a design for an engine room crane which will provide maintenance support for the main engine. Your design should include the rails the crane will sit on.

The crane must be strong enough to lift all the machinery parts for normal maintenance. The crane must have a high and low speed lift mechanism.

The crane must take up no more space than necessary  ,ensuring that the top of the engine room can be as low as possible

The crane must travel longitudinally and transversely along the engine room with a control and transversely along the engine room with a control accessible anywhere the crane hook can reach.

The wire must be made of quality stainless steel capable of withstanding static and dynamic loads encountered in normal maintenance procedures. The hook must be a swivel type and must be small enough to fit into the cylinders.

The crane must be capable of lifting atleast 2 tonne from the bottom of the engineroom at some position.

The crane must adhere to all current legislation for a british flagged vessel your design must clearly show all calculations made, method of construction ,materials selected, intended operating instructions ,detail drawings and descriptions of components.

You will produce a detail design of your preferred solution , This will include..

1)      A construction drawing ,component drawings and circuit drawings (if necessary)

2)      A complete parts list

3)      A price list showing the cost of each component.

4)      A comparision of priced of each component from 3 different sources.

5)      A detailed descriptin of how to construct your solution

6)      A comprehensive test plan detailing how your solution is to be tested.

A detailed a report of 3000 words detailing the following

1) Evaluation of the whether the solution met the requirements was less that the requirements or overtook the requirements.

2) Evaluation of whether the schedule was kept or not.

3) Evaluation of whether the original design was maintained or not.

4) Details of any unforeseen circumstances and your actions to overcome them.

5) Reflective evaluation of how well you did with this project.

6) Details of knowledge you have gained from this project.

7) Details of skills you have acquired or developed doing this project
