Written Communication Assignment

This assignment is an individual assignment and not a team effort. Your submission for this assignment must be submitted as a word document or a pdf file on Blackboard. The purpose of this assignment is to practice writing a technical document.

You are designing a new elevator for the peralta building. You will be designing a functional prototype (i.e. a scaled down version of the design) towards this effort and writing a proposal towards the design of the prototype. The elevator needs to be motorized and a wheel should be attached to the motor which will rotate (and move the elevator car up or down depending on the direction of the motor spinning) as shown in Fig. 1. The format and content of the documentation is described in detail below. This should be a cohesive, narrative, professional document.

Format:

• Title Page: Title, Your full name
• Document should be written as a formal technical document with appropriately formatted section headings (i.e. bold and/or underline).
• Sections to include: Introduction, Description of the existing elevator, proposed design, references

Content:

• Introduction

o Introduce the project and the result that you are planning to obtain

• Description of the existing elevator

o Include general information about the current elevator in the PRLTA building (Make, manufacturer, lbs supported and any other technical details)

o Include a picture of the elevator

• Proposed Design (this is a bullet list of points that should be included in this section.

Your write up should not be a list that answers each of these points but a cohesive narrative)

o What is the height, length and width of your elevator car? How is the string attached?

o What is the diameter of the wheel? What is the circumference? How many degrees are needed to raise the elevator box up by one floor (six inches)? How many rotations is this? Include the equations you used to calculate this. (Do not show the numerical calculations, just show the equations with variables. Remember to number the equations and explain what each symbol in the equation means.)

o Predict the degrees and rotations to get to each floor using a table as shown in Table 1

o What is the maximum weight do you propose that the elevator prototype can carry?

o Research online and select a motor that will work for this prototype. What are the specifications of the motor (Voltage, rated power, rated current etc.,) and the cost? How did you select this motor? Justify your selection.

• References:

o Include all references used (references should also be cited in the text of the report).

o Use an appropriate citation format.

The New Elevator for The Peralta Building

Looking to design a new elevator for the Peralta building. will design a functional prototype will contain explanations on what we need to design this elevator.

The current elevator in the PRLTA building is a hydraulic elevator, it was installed in 2008 by ThyssenKrupp with traditional fixtures.

The elevator I'm proposing will be faster, will make less noise and will use less energy. It will be a geared elevator that will cost 0.12 per Kilowatt Hour and it will be a Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) driver "which use an AC hoist motor rather than a DC hoist motor. The VVVF provides smooth acceleration and deceleration, excellent speed control and reduced noise levels." (thyssenkrupp)

It will have a capacity of 3500 lbs. and its speed will be 700 fpm. It will also have an auto light shut-off system and an auto exhaust shut-ff system that'll save energy.
