FDSCI 203 General Position Paper Guidelines Purpose

The ability to effectively communicate thoughts and feelings on complex or controversial issues is a highly important skill to develop, and is a valuable skill in many fields of study, not just science. The purpose of the Position Paper in FDSCI 203 is to provide you with an opportunity to think about an issue, develop a defensible position on that issue, construct a personal plan of action regarding it, and then succinctly communicate your thoughts and feelings, in writing. This will NOT be an easy task, so should be approached seriously and with much thought.

Sources

Cite two or more reliable sources in your paper. Select a writing style of your choice, such as APA, MLA, or Chicago. Consistently apply the conventions associated with your selected writing style as you cite your sources in the text of your document. Also, include the full resource information in a reference list at the conclusion of the document. Feel free to use Citation Machine or a similar resource of your choice to assist you to appropriately apply style guide conventions.

Length and Writing Quality

This paper should be 3/4 to one page long, excluding your reference list. It should be no longer than one page double-spaced. Your paper should be well written. Practice good writing skills. Spelling and grammar are important and will be graded. If you need assistance refining your writing, use the BYU-I Writing Center as a resource. If you need help with the content of your paper, talk to your instructor.
