Use the following graph for questions 1,2 & 3. Assume an initial velocity of 1m/s and an initial displacement of -2 m.

1201_graph.png

1. Create the velocity-time and displacement time profiles.

2. What is the velocity at t = 2s? 4s?

3. What is the total displacement of the object?

4. Convert 2,550.0 W into units of kcal/h.

5. A pressure gauge reads 195 kPa. What is the absolute pressure at this point in units of psi if the local atmospheric pressure is 0.94 atm?

6. A vacuum gauge connected to a tank reads 48 kPa at a location where atmospheric pressure is 13.8 psi. What is the absolute pressure in units of kPa?

7. A force of 300 lbf is applied to the piston of a cylinder, compressing the gas within the cylinder. The piston has a radius on 15 in. If the local atmospheric pressure is 0.98 atm, what is the absolute pressure inside the cylinder in psi?

8. The temperature of a mixture is raised from 30°C to 56°C. What is the temperature change of the mixture in units of °F, °R, and K?

9. If the mixture in the problem above has a specific heat of 4.912 kJ/kg-K, how much energy did it take to raise the temperature that amount? Assume mass = 1 kg.

10. An object is dropped off a balcony and reaches a maximum speed of 45 ft/s before hitting the ground. How high is the balcony above the ground?

11. A 70 kg person is standing at the edge of a diving platform. The PE of the person is 6800 J. If he steps off the platform and freefalls, what is the velocity of the person right before he hits the water?

12. A 165 Ibm person climbs a stairway consisting of 160 stairs, each with a vertical rise of 8 inches. How much work does this person do against gravity?

13. A spring is compressed 2 inches from its at-rest position. The spring is then compressed an additional 3 inches. If the spring constant is 2600 N/cm, find the total work done in compressing the spring in units of kJ.

14. During a time interval of 1 hour, a heat engine absorbs 360 MJ of energy from a high-temperature source while rejecting 40 KW to a low-temperature sink. How much power does the heat engine produce? What is the thermal efficiency of the heat engine?

15. A heat engine absorbs 45 MW from a 252°C combustion chamber and rejects 22.0 MW to the atmosphere at 32°C. Find the actual thermal efficiency and the Carnot thermal efficiency of the heat engine.

16. A sphere with a diameter of 10 meters contains 750 kg of a liquid. If the liquid fills 2/3 volume of the container, find the density, specific weight, and specific gravity of the liquid.

17. Find the volume of ammonia that weighs the same as 0.60 m3 of glycerin (see tables in back of text for information on ammonia and glycerin).

18. Find the change in pressure required to decrease the volume of Octane at 20°C from 13.2 ft3 to 13.1 ft3.

19. An object is completely submerged in water. If the surface pressure is 3 atm and the total pressure is 1.53 MPa, what is the depth of the object?

20. A cylindrical container has a diameter of 1 cm and contains 987 g of an unknown liquid which has a density of 0.345 kg/cm3. If the liquid completely fills the container, determine the height of the cylinder.

21. Hydraulic fluid in a cylinder is compressed resulting in an 8.36% reduction of volume. If the resulting pressure change is 42.6 MPa, determine the Bulk modulus of the fluid.

Use the information provided below for Problems 22-25:

A 408 Ibm, six-wheeled, solar-powered rover is exploring the surface of Moon. During a 1200 ft uphill climb, the rover's velocity changed from 6.50 ft/s to 9.00 ft/s. The hill has an uphill incline of 11 degrees with respect to the horizontal. Assume no friction, a hard surface, and a straight route up to the top of the hill.

22. While the rover is performing its mission, what is its weight?

23. When the rover stops, each wheel is in full contact with the surface of the moon with an area of 0.175 ft2. What is the pressure in psi exerted by the rover on the surface of the Moon?

24. What is the gravitational work Wg for the rover?

25. What is the acceleration work Wa for the rover?
