Use corn and cottonseed meal (expeller processed) to formulate 100 pounds of a supplement that contains 17% CP and .91 Mcal NEL/ lb. Of course, this is for dairy cattle (hence the NEL), so this is on DM basis. The corn contains 10% CP and 0.84 Mcal NEL/ lb on a DM basis, and is 89%DM. The cottonseed meal contains 43.6% CP and .812 Mcal NEL/ lb on a DM basis, and the CSM is 94% DM.
Make sure to include how many pounds of corn and CSM you will need, both on Dry Matter basis and an As Fed basis. (Again, you are mixing 100 pounds of Dry Matter, so your final amounts of ingredients will add up to more than 100 pounds).
the CP equation will = the # of pounds of CP in 100 pounds of ration
The NE equation will = the # of Mcal in 100 pounds of ration.
17% of 100 is the number of pounds of protein in 100 pounds of ration DM
.91 Mcal/lb X 100 pounds is the number of Mcal in 100 pounds of ration DM.
