Title:  Sine Wave Oscillators

AIM OF THIS ASSIGNMENT

You will undertake a number of investigative activities designed to develop your understanding of sine wave oscillators.

ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES

In this assignment, for LO4, you will need to show that you can evaluate, design, build and test amplifier circuits.

(Task 1) Describe the circuit conditions and the methods used to achieve sinusoidal oscillation.

(Task 2) Build and evaluate a sine wave oscillator to a given specification.

(Task 3) Explain the advantages of crystal-controlled oscillator circuits.

TASK INTRODUCTION

TASK 1: (Describe the circuit conditions and methods used to achieve sinusoidal oscillation)

For the oscillator circuit shown below, you need to explain the operation of the circuit.

Your explanation for the oscillator must cover the following:

1) What every component and every stage of the oscillator circuit does.

2) A sketch of the output waveform with a full explanation.

3) What applications this oscillator circuit can be used for.

TASK 2: (Build and evaluate a sine wave oscillator to a given specification)

Part A: Design an audio-frequency oscillator based on a linear integrated circuit amplifier and a Wien feedback network. Your oscillator should meet the following specification:

Amplitude of oscillation in the range of 8 to 12 volts

Part B: Build your oscillator using simulation software and explain how it achieves the required frequency and amplitude of oscillation.

Part C: Build your oscillator in the electronics lab (33B) using RS proto boards and explain how it achieves the required frequency and amplitude of oscillation.

Part D: Write a report on your findings, highlighting any differences found between your theoretical design (simulated) and physical (actual) design produced.

Opportunity for Distinction - You will need to demonstrate to your tutor you have completed Parts A to D independently.

TASK 3: (Explain the advantages of crystal-controlled oscillator circuits)

For the oscillator circuit shown below, you need to explain the operation of the circuit.

Your explanation for the oscillator must cover the following:

1) What type of oscillator the circuit is.

2) What every component and every stage of the oscillator circuit does.

3) A sketch of the output waveform with a full explanation.

4) A detailed discussion of the advantages of crystal oscillators.

5) What applications the oscillator circuit can be used for.
