Things to do- We ought to aide by earthquake resisting building codes during construction and retrofitting of existing buildings.
We should have a first AID box handy and learn first aid treatment.
We can do occasional practice drills to provide our family the knowledge on avoiding injury and panic during an earthquake.

We should have with us life saving kits consisting of blankets, torch, candles, matchbox, water bottle, medical kits, radio with additional batteries etc.

All the members of our families must be familiar with electric switches so that in case of any disastrous event it can be switched off.

Things to do during an earthquake:

(a)   If we are in a house:

We should not be panicky during an earthquake. We should try to remain clam thinking patiently before making any move about the result of any action we may take.

We should take protection under a table or any other furniture that is strong enough.

We should try to remain close to the floor as much as possible while in standing or sitting position.

We should move a away from glass windows, bookshelves or any other heavy object.

We should prepare ourselves to move with our families.

All the switches of gas, electricity, refrigerator, heater etc. must be switched off.

(b)   If we are in a shop :

We need not run for an exit.

We should move away from display shelves made of glass or any other haxardous thing.

We should keep distance from electric points and cables.

We should keep away from weak portions like partition walls, false ceiling etc.

(c)    If we are in a high-rise building:

We should take shelter under desk or table.

We should not run for exits.

We should stay in the building until vibrations stop and we are directed to leave.

We should never use the elevator.

(d)   If outside:

When we area outside during an earthquake we should keep away from high buildings, walls, power cables and objects that are likely to fall down.

We should never run through the streets.

We should try to reach an open area that is away from all hazards.

(e)   If in a vehicle :

We should stop the vehicle and park it in an open and safe area.

We may inquire about our family members.

We should never try to move any severely injured person if he is in danger of further injuries.

(f)     If inside a building :

If we are trapped we should try to use a telephone for information.

We should check whether water and electricity services are turned off or not.

We should remain in a safe position until shaking stops.

If available, we should try to listen to the radio for any information and advice.

Keeping patience is of utmost importance together with telling our family members to be patient.

Any inflammable material should be placed at a safer place.

We should be prepared to get out of the damaged building. If we sustain any injury, we should take treatment as soon as possible.
