The two authors that I enjoyed reading about were Charlotte Gilman and Kate Chopin. When reading about "The Yellow Wall-paper," it was Charlotte Gilman's explanation about going through depression. It is written as a journal rather than a story with the narrator telling a story. I feel as if that is why I enjoyed it so much, because we are seeing her life through her own eyes. Her husband, John, who is also her personal doctor, sends her off for treatment for her "nervous depression." They told her that she needed to quit with her writing until she is feeling better, but Gilman believes that writing is a way of expressing herself without being judged. She gets annoyed with how ugly the wallpaper is in the room that she is staying in. She is constantly staring at the walls due to her depression. (Gilman, pg. 1671) "The color is repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight." She just wants to be seen as human and not seen for her disease. She is being forced to act normal when she is suffering from her diease.
