Having little controls (such as diseases, predators, and parasites) on their populations in the Everglades ecosystem they have been introduced into, their populations have exploded -- growing over and killing many of the native plants while providing no food and/or shelter the native wildlife is adapted to.

In recent years, the explosion of invasive exotic animals has become apparent as several species of pythons and other snakes, iguanas, birds and fish are now regularly sighted in the wetlands, pinelands, and hammocks.
