(i) A hollow cylinder of aluminium 1 m long with a 40 mm outside diameter is at a temperature of 20 °C. What is the change in length and
circumference of the cylinder when it is cooled to â?'25 °C? (Note: the thermal co-efficient of expansion of aluminium is 24 Ã? 10â?'6 Kâ?'1.)

(ii) Assuming that the cylinder is fixed at both ends and that its wall thickness is 7.5 mm, what force would be exerted by the cylinder during this change in temperature? (Note: the Youngâ??s modulus for aluminium is 70 GPa.)
