Task 1

You have been asked by your construction director to provide a prediction of short term sales growth for your company and to provide an assessment of several types of project that have been undertaken over the recent period. Your research has provided you with the following data:

Predict the possible group sales values from table 1 for 2013, 2014 and 2015. You must use graphical means to support your prediction.

Indicate which type(s) of project in table 2, in your opinion, would be the most suitable for the group to pursue in future. Use suitable data presentation analysis and comparison figures to justify your opinions.

Task 2 - Surveying and setting out (LO2)

You are the QS for a project consisting of an apartment block being constructed on a site containing a hill.

The hill is of regular cross-section as indicated on the sketch below.

385_Graph.jpg

Use a suitable technique to calculate the cross sectional area of the hill indicated. Justify your use of that particular technique.

If the development requires a 30m long length of the hill to be fully removed what would be the volume of soil to be excavated?

Assuming an average bulking factor of 2.1 and density of 1400 kg/m3, how many lorry trips would be required to remove the excavated material, if the average lorry is loaded with 13 tonnes of material?

If the excavation above is to be carried out by two machines, A and B, what is the hourly output of each machine if it had been recorded on previous sites that:

If A worked for 5 hours and B worked for 8 hours 320 m3 of material could be excavated, and if A worked for 8 hours and B for 2 hours 270 m3 of material could be excavated.

Task 3

Below are the co-ordinates of the corners of the basement for the above development that have been given by the architect, but the drawings will not be ready for another week.

Calculate the volume of  material that will have to be removed if the whole basement has a raft foundation of 600mm.

Assume an even reduced dig to top of foundation level has been undertaken and all sides will be close dug with no shuttering.

Provide suitable drawings to illustrate your calculations.

Piles are required for the above foundation. Provide a justification for how many piles are required and their diameter, if the total frictional area needs to be 560 m2 and the depth of each one has to be 5m. The base of each pile is taken as providing no friction. You should use multiple scenarios to provide data on which to base your opinions.

Task 4 - Quality control

Below are the concrete cube crushing test results for a site earlier this year. You have been asked to provide feedback on the results obtained for a quality assurance audit.

All pours used the same specification concrete from the same batching plant. The specified 28 day strength is 40 N/mm2.
