Simulation of Medical Engineering

This assignment is related to the Total Knee Implant associated with solidwork study

Aim and Learning Outcomes:

To use appropriate software to solve a topical biomedical engineering problem and use the solutions to make recommendations on the practicalities of the problem.

- Monitor, interpret and apply the results of analysis and modelling in order to bring about continuous improvement. (E2)
- Apply quantitative methods and computer software relevant to their engineering technology discipline(s), frequently within a multidisciplinary context. (E3)

Objectives

You will decide an appropriate analysis to solve the given problem. Use the software to determine the solution to the problem.
Comment on your results and assumptions of your analysis Provide conclusions on your results in a report format.

Report Format (follow this strictly)

1. Introduction
2. Background
3. Describe your method
4. Assumptions (bulleted list)
5. Analysis
a. Mainly images / tabulated data / commentary
6. Conclusions

The report should be no longer than 15 pages.

The Problem:

You a working for a biomedical appliance company which needs to model part a proposed knee replace product (TKR) to be used on a number of different potential patients of differing ages. The product consists of three parts and the company wants to try out a potential different material for fermoral component, namely, Ti-13Nb-13Zr.

The other components for the prosthetic knee are:

1. Tibial bearing manufactured from UHMWPE
2. Tibial tray produced from Titanium Ti-6l-4v materials.

All cement will be PMMA
Component 2 has a thickness 12.7 mm
In order to evaluate the potential prosthetic joint there will be a number of load configurations which are given below:
1. Vertical force offset 9.5mm
2. Three different stages of the gait cycle 15°, 45°, 60° flexion
3. Anterior/posterior Force is approximately 60% of vertical force
4. Average Torque in walking 6Nm
5. Maximum mass 120kg

The problem here is analyse one of a series of potential prosthetic designs for various loadings and identify the potential problems that could occur with the proposed design. Given in the data shown are the various load levels encountered during movement.

All parts are normally designed for a minimum of fifteen years under normal daily conditions. The materials are chosen because of both biocompatibility and mechanical strength. You have been provided with three CAD parts produced in Solidworks which can be edited for analysis purposes.

Details of some of the potential loading conditions are given in Appendix1

You will carry out appropriate analyses to assess the suitability of each part and make recommendations to the design team based upon your findings.

Hand-in requirements

Safely retain your part file and analysis on your system.

You will be awarded a grade out of 100% for this assignment which will be capped at 40%. Illustrative or written Feedback will be provided through Moodle and an in-class discussion.

Students that have not shown significant engagement i.e. lecture attendance or Moodle activity can expect to be asked to do a viva before any grades are awarded.
