Science and Engineering Lab Report

This task requires you to write a lab report based on an in-class experiment.

What you will be assessed on:

  • Can you write a clear, detailed extended report, which integrates graphical and textual sources.
  • Can you write a lab report with standard scientific writing style, layout, paragraphing, headings and numbering systems.
  • Can you summarise, report and comment on accumulated factual information, and present this in a well structured way, including abstract, processes and procedures, results and findings.
  • Can you present diagrams, graphs, tables and equations accurately to clearly present findings.
  • Can you locate and use scientific theory and summarise this information from sources.
  • Can you use accurate in-text citations and prepare a list of references in a bibliography using a consistent, standardized Harvard referencing system.

General Guidelines:

  • You should use the lab manual you wrote during the experiment to help you write the lab report.
  • You are expected to research the theory behind the experiment and use at least one source in addition to the lab manual.
  • You can use the lab manual to write the report, but you should not copy directly from it. If you use the lab manual, you do not need to reference it.
  • You should include a diagram for the method.
  • You should produce graphics electronically.

Length Guidelines:

  • Your Lab Report should be 1500-1700 words in length.
  • If you write considerably more or less than the word limit bracket you may be penalised.

1. 1st Reading: read the whole script through once to get a holistic impression of the level and to decide which band you think it is in. Begin by looking at the 60 band and adjust up or down from there.

Please Note: The descriptors within a band are threshold descriptors; that means if all the points within the descriptor are met across the band, then the student will be given 40, 50, 60 or 70 etc., depending on the band.

2. 2nd Reading: refine or check your impression based on closer reading and consideration of each criteria:

a. Work through each of the criteria one by one.

b. Beginning with Academic Language, Style and Presentation.

c. Decide if the script is at the threshold of the band (40, 50, 60 etc) in the particular criteria or if it demonstrates a better performance in some areas (thereby moving up to low (L) or mid-low (ML) within the descriptor).

d. If you feel that the script demonstrates that a student is working comfortably in the areas described within the descriptor, then you should move your rating up the scale (to mid-high (MH) or high (H) within the descriptor).   This allows you to use a fuller range of marks within the band (and to be able to justify it).

e. At the HIGH end of the band, you would then need to decide if the student is actually fulfilling everything at the next threshold level, thereby moving to the next band.

f. If so, you would then repeat the process above (steps a-e) to decide on the finer grading.

g. Similarly, at the LOW end of the band, you would then need to decide if the script demonstrates a performance below the descriptor band.  You would then repeat steps a-e starting at the threshold of the band below.

3. Final reading: check that you are happy with the decisions made and adjust if needed.

4. Complete student's feedback sheet: use the 'Notes to Tutors on marking and script annotation/feedback to students' handout for guidance.  N.B. This is to ensure that there is consistency in the way that feedback is given to students by the module tutors within the college and by module tutors across KIC.
