Run off

Some of the rainfall is soaked into the soil and excess water flows over the land surface along the natural slope of the area. Run off is the main source of water for lakes and rivers which ultimately drain into the sea. Soil characteristics and the topography such as smoothness and steepness of the slope influence the rate and the magnitude of run off. The flowing water acts as an agent of soil erosion and weathering of the underlying rock. Excessive run off during the rainy season causes flood in many parts of our country.
