Reinforced Concrete Beam - Design for Flexure & Shear Considerations

PART 1 - Field trip to Coreslab Structures Ltd.

you will write a technical report approximately 8-10 pages in length summarizing your findings. The bound report will be double spaced and will include Table of Contents, Introduction, Conclusions, photos and sketches. Spelling, grammar and presentation will account for about 20% of the mark for this part. Provide Figure numbers and descriptions for your photos and sketches and make sure you refer to them in your report. Be sure to reference any material that is not yours

OBJECTIVES
1. The hollow core slab is the predominant product for Coreslab Structures in Waterdown. What are:
a. The ranges in size of the product
b. The applications for this product. Where/how is it used?
c. The typical spans and loadings it can carry

2. Describe some of the advantages and disadvantages of using hollow core slab as a floor system.

3. Describe in detail how to use the Coreslab Proprietary Hollowcore Design tables. Create your own independent design example.

4. Another important precast product at Coreslab is their exterior finished wall panels. Briefly describe the range of finishes and colours available

5. In the manufacture of exterior finished wall panels at Coreslab, SUPERPLASTICIZER is used in the design of the concrete mix. What does "SUPER-P" do to the mix and why is it used in their wall panels? What is the desired outcome?

6. State the current approximate cost per square foot for a supplied and installed hollowcore slab given the following factors:
• This is a school facility considered to be a large job, located locally in Hamilton
• Skim coat will be required for application of carpeting
• Ceilings will be exposed and will require touch-up
• Crane access is good.
• Estimated installation rate is 6000-8000 square feet per day
Do your own research to compare this cost to a cast in place alternative.

7. What is the main structural building material and structural system used in the two fabrication plants? Why was this system used for this application? What is the approximate size of each plant?

PART 2 - Reinforced Concrete Beam - Design for Flexure & Shear Considerations

Design the tension steel (flexure) and show (do not design) the shear reinforcement (stirrups) for a rectangular, singly reinforced concrete beam to satisfy the following conditions. Use #10 stirrups, and cover for "not exposed" conditions.

SPECIFIED LIVE LOAD : Loaded Bus (see OBC)

SPECIFIED DEAD LOAD : 7.2 Kpa (includes dead load of your beam)

BEAM SPACING : 4 meters

BEAM SPAN : 6 meters

REINFORCEMENT RATIO : about 0.5ρbalanced

fy = 400 Mpa, f'c = 40 Mpa, max. aggregate = 20 mm

FOR PART 2 PLEASE SUBMIT:

1) Clear, concise, neatly organized design notes preferably spiral bound

2) Cross section of beam showing all dimensions & reinforcement

3) Longitudinal section of the beam showing stirrup locations.
