Red pigment is produced in a fictional plant through the action of the gene paintball (P). Flowers of varying intensity from pale pink to bright red are made when the activity of the paintball enzyme is between 24 and 50. When the level of enzyme is below 24 the flowers fail to develop. When the level of enzyme activity exceeds 50, the flowers explode and spray red pigment on unsuspecting bystanders (hence the name of the gene).
