Purpose/aims

This assignment provides the learner with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the design process and how the planning and design phases are coordinated and managed

Background or scenario

You are a new employee in an Engineering Consulting Company as a Civil Engineer. Your company wants to bid for a large number of various new projects which means that you have to manage more than 1 project simultaneously.

The projects you are in charge of are:

The design and construction of a 200m2 two storey house at Panorama in the city of Thessaloniki

The design and construction of the road leading to a plastic containers manufacturing plant at Sindos

The full restoration of a 6 room bed and breakfast hotel in Pilio

You have to perform the following tasks:

1. Discuss the planning phase of construction projects above by listing what documents are required in order to obtain an approval from the relevant planning authority.

2. What are the similarities and what the differences in the design process between these projects? Discuss the design phase for each project.

3. Evaluate how the planning and design phases are coordinated and managed. Make a detailed list of the main construction activities for the construction of the house at Panorama. Present these in a Bill of Quantities (BOQ) form.

4 i Explain and describe the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved in the planning and design phases for project 1
ii Explain and describe the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved in the production phase for project 2
iii Evaluate the corporate and personal responsibilities of all parties involved in constructionforprojects 1 and 3.

5 Regarding the house at Panorama, would you choose steel or reinforcedconcrete frame? Justify your answer.

6 Mention the main design measures as to enhance the energy performance of the hotel in Pilio.

7 Why do you think most responsibilities remain with the Client under CDM regulations?

8 For the Bill of Quantities you produced in task 3, calculate volumes of materials and work out a total cost. Any assumptions made must be clearly stated.

9 Produce a CAD plan view in 1:100 scale for the house in Panorama
