The next, F1, generation of plants all had pink flowers - heterozygous for flower colour. The F1 generation was allowed to cross randomly with each other; the seed was then collected and planted the following season. The resulting, F2, generation had:-

145 plants with red flowers
289 plants with pink flowers
138 plants with white flowers
a total of 572 plants.
Genetic theory would predict a ratio of: 1Red:2Pink:1White.
