Project Evaluation: Anatomy and Physiology

Be sure to include ALL pages of this project (including the directions and the assignment) when you send the project to your teacher for grading. Don't forget to put your name and I.D. number at the top of this page!

When you have completed this project, you may submit it electronically through the online course management system by scanning the pages into either .pdf (Portable Document Format), or .doc (Microsoft Word document) format. Using .gif images that are smaller than 8 x 10 inches, or 600 x 800 pixels, will help ensure that the project is small enough to upload. Remember that a file that is larger than 5,000 K will NOT go through the online system. Check the instructions in the online course for more information. Your project will be graded according to the rubric found at the end of this document.

Reproductive System Project

For your last project in Anatomy and Physiology, you will research a topic that you have not yet read about in your book but most likely have received information about in the past: sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Each year the Center for Disease Control and Prevention releases a report card based on data received from private and public sectors regarding the more common reported STDs in the United States like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Unfortunately, since this report card relies on the information supplied by individuals that have tested positive, there is concern the number of infected individuals is much larger due to unreported and undiagnosed cases. STDs are a significant health challenge in the United States and nearly 10 million new cases each year are reported by people ages 15-24. Without the proper diagnosis and treatment, these infections pose serious threats to an individual's health-both short and long-term.

For this project, you are asked to research three different STDs and write a minimum 200 word summary of each disease based on the five criteria listed. This project will preview your upcoming readings in Unit 6-Lesson 12, which covers Chapter 21 in the textbook, pages 460-461. Focus your research on the five criteria points first and then incorporate additional information as you find it applicable to your response. You are expected to go beyond the textbook for information and will need to cite your sources using APA style. You are encouraged to use resources available online, or at your local library, to complete this project. You project will be graded based on a rubric at the end of this project. (Each summary will be worth about 33.3 points)

Summary Criteria:

1. List the short-term effects of the STD. List the long-term effects.

2. What is the mode of transmission of the STD? Are there multiple modes of transmission?

3. What are the symptoms in male individuals affected with the STD versus the symptoms in female subjects?

4. Which system or systems does the STD affect? Be specific. A diagram is not necessary but may be helpful. A diagram will not count toward word count.

5. What type of treatment is there? Does the treatment cure the STD or just treat symptoms of the STD, or both?

Research Response

You will write a 200-300 word response per STD based on the five criteria points. You are not restricted to just those five points if additional information is needed to further explain your choices. The purpose of this activity is to explore and analyze the three different STDs and gain insight into how these diseases affect the individual.

Your responses will be submitted either as a Word document (.doc) or Adobe Reader file (.pdf). Your response per choice should be between 200 and 300 words for a total of 600-900 words. Cite your sources using correct format and use only highly trusted resources from the Internet and your local library. Use the following citation link to help format your citations, or look up APA style at the library or online. You are not limited by the number of citations but are required to use three different sources. Your textbook is a great start, but does not count as one of your resources.
