Project Description:

For this project, you are to design a battery-powered ride on vehicle for children for motion at three speeds: 1.0 ins for backward movement, and 1.0 m's and 2.0 mis for forward movement. Use of SolidWorks, MATLAB, Microsoft Office, and/or similar resources is encouraged.

Although, simple in its design, the ride-on vehicle allows basic analysis and design of many of the systems and components covered in this course.

- Transmission: gears, bearings, shafts, fasteners

- Drive train: motors, clutches, shafts

Suspension: spring variations (e.g. length, stiffness, diameter)

- Steering: motors, levers, fasteners

Luckily, your team is not responsible for the design of the entire vehicle. Your team will focus on the general motion of the vehicle (i.e. the drivetrain and transmission).

The applicable design specifications for the vehicle are as follows:

1. The base of the vehicle must measure 0.75 m wide and 1.0 m long. Wheels should be positioned as close to the corners of the vehicle as possible along the 1.0 m sides and outside of the 0.75 m base. The total width of the assembled vehicle with wheels, motor, and required hardware should not exceed 1.0 in.

2. The total mass of the vehicle and electronics is approximately 45 kg and must be accelerated from a stopped position to a constant velocity of 1.0 m/s within 10 m.

3. Changing the configuration for a selected speed (1.0 or 2.0 m/s) is done while the cart is stopped. A mechanical means of changing speed is required -No variable-speed controllers are allowed for the motor.

4. All components for the motion system, other than the battery, must be attached to the bottom of the vehicle base and allow 50 mm of ground clearance between the ground and the bottom of the assembled components. The minima clearance between moving parts and the base of the vehicle is 15 mm.

5. The vehicle will be operated outdoors in temperatures ranging from 0° C to 40° C.

6. A DC motor (or motors) will power the vehicle using a battery pack with a maximum voltage of 30V. A list of suggested motors is provided below. You are not limited to the motors on this list.

7. All shafts must have a minimum safety factor of 2.

8. You must use rolling element bearings.

9. Your goal is to minimi,e the added weight (motor(s) and drivetrain) while meeting all specifications. Excessive expense should also be avoided.

10. All assumptions must be clearly stated and documented.
