Project Assignment: Anatomy and Physiology

Be sure to include ALL pages of this project (including the directions and the assignment) when you send the project to your teacher for grading. Don't forget to put your name and I.D. number at the top of this page!

This project consists of one activity worth 100 points and counts for 10% of your overall grade in this course. Be sure to read all the instructions and assemble all the necessary materials before you begin. Feel free to attach extra pages if you need them.

When you have completed this project, you may submit it electronically through the online course management system by scanning the pages into either .pdf (Portable Document Format), or .doc (Microsoft Word document) format. Using .gif images that are smaller than 8 x 10 inches, or 600 x 800 pixels, will help ensure that the project is small enough to upload. Remember that a file that is larger than 5,000 K will NOT go through the online system. Make sure your pages are legible before you upload them. Check the instructions in the online course for more information. Your project will be graded according to the rubric found at the end of this document.

The Nervous System

1. Describe the structure and function of the nervous system. Choose and define at least 8 terms from your textbook describing the function of the nervous system. Be sure to underline the 8 terms from your textbook that you choose. Your response should contain a minimum of 150 words.

2. Identify the major divisions and main subdivisions within the nervous system in a diagram of your choice. Then draft a response to how your diagram works together. Research may be necessary. Your response should contain a minimum of 150 words.

3a. Explain how a nerve impulse passes along a neuron.

3b. Explain the process of syntactical transmission (the process in which the message goes from one cell to the next).

3c. Research a chemical of your choice that can affect synaptic transmission. Examples of such chemicals that affect neurotransmission are methamphetamine, nicotine, alcohol, sarin gas, and soman gas. Be sure to indicate how neurotransmission is affected as well as short term and/or long term effects of the chemical.

4. Identify and describe three disorders of the nervous system in a minimum of 200 words. What part of the nervous system does each disorder affect? Are each of the disorders treatable? What are the outcomes for the patient that have the disorder?

5. Identify and briefly explain three methods used to assess the functions of the nervous system. Your response should contain a minimum of 100 words.

Your responses will be submitted either as a Word document (.doc) or Adobe Reader file (.pdf). Each response should be clear and summarizing and meet the outlined objectives. Cite your sources using correct format and use only highly trusted resources from the Internet and your local library. Use the following citation link to help format your citations, or look up APA style at the library or online. You are not limited by the number of citations but are required to use three different sources. Your course textbook is a great start.
