Question 1: Why is the nitrogen cycle biologically important?

A) Nitrogen is a component of amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
B) Nitrogen forms the framework for organic molecules essential to all organisms.
C) Nitrogen is a major constituent of phospholipids, ATP, and other energy-storing molecules.
D) Photosynthesis by plants removes substantial amounts of atmospheric nitrogen.
E) The nitrogen cycle is NOT important biologically; the atmosphere is composed of 78% nitrogen, so nitrogen is freely available to all living organisms regardless of where it is in its cycle.

Question 2: A farmer contacts an herbicide supplier and orders 5 tanks of herbicide for his 1000 acres of corn. The supplier assumes his corn is Liberty Link Corn, the most commonly planted corn in the area, and sends 5 tanks of Liberty herbicide to the farmer. The farmer sprays the herbicide and a week later, all of his corn is dead! What is the most likely reason why this happened?

A) The farmer did not plant Liberty Link corn, which is genetically modified for Liberty herbicide resistance. Because the farmer's corn was not resistant to the herbicide, the Liberty herbicide disrupted amino acid synthesis of the farmer's corn and so, all of the corn died.
B) The farmer did not plant Liberty Link corn, which is genetically modified for Liberty herbicide resistance. Because the farmer's corn was not resistant to the herbicide, the herbicide burned holes in the corn causing it to die.
C) The farmer planted Liberty Link corn, which is not genetically modified and so any herbicide applied to it will cause it to die.
D) The farmer planted Liberty Link corn, but applied the herbicide in too small of a quantity causing the corn to die.
E) The farmer forgot to apply the herbicide and the weeds took over all of the resources outcompeting the corn, causing it to die.
