Problem 1: Design a ONE-WAY slab for the condition below:

Slab Design

620_Design a ONE-WAY slab.jpg

Assume:

1. External beams are 10" wide

2. Internal beams are 16" wide

3. Concrete has f'c = 4000 psi

4. Dead load of floor weight plus 10 psf

5. Live load of 100 psf

6. Grade 60 steel

Design - A One way slab to meet this application

Problem 2: Assume that the slab above will be constructed as TWO-WAY slab. Assume that the slab will be built as a flat plate, with no internal beams, and no edge beams.

a. Can the ACI Direct Design Method for two way slabs be applied in this case? Why or why not? Comment on all eligibility requirements, even if you know already that one is no met.

b. Even if you have identified that the ACI Direct Design Method cannot be used, we WILL use it for this assignment. Draw sketches showing the extent of the column strips and middle strips that will be used in each direction.

c. Determine the appropriate thickness for the slab using the ACI code.

d. Determine the statical moments that will be used for each of the spans in each direction.

e. Determine the portion of the statical moments that must be split into the positive and negative moments that will be checked in each portion of the flat slab floor. Draw a sketch which summarizes this information.

f. Determine the portions of the positives moments and negative moments that should be appropriate to the column strips and middle strips.

g. Design the steel reinforcement for the column and middle strips.
