Problem 1: A newly identified fruit fly mutant, cyclops eye (large and single in the middle of the head), is autosomal dominant, the recessive condition gives two eyes. A second gene, golden body, is a recessive X---linked mutation. The dominant allele gives a black body. A true breeding, black body, two eye female is crossed with a golden body male that is true breeding for cyclops eyes.

a. Define your alleles and write out the genotypes of each of the parents in the cross:

i. true breeding, black body, two eye female: ________________________

ii. golden body male that is true breeding for cyclops eyes: ________

b. Perform the cross and state the genotypes, genotypic ratios, phenotypes and phenotypic ratios of the progeny?

c. If the F1 progeny are intercrossed state the probabilities for each of the following:

i. A golden body male with a Cyclops eye?

ii. A female true breeding for both black body and Cyclops eye?

iii. A black body female?

Problem 2: The color of spotted cattle is controlled by an autosomal, sex---influenced gene. The gene M produces mahogany---and---white spots, and it is dominant in bulls (male cattle), but recessive in cows (female cattle). The alternate allele, M', is responsible for red---and---white spots, and it is dominant in cows, but recessive in males. A male and female (both heterozygous) are crossed.

a. What are the phenotypes for each of the parents?

i. Heterozygous male: __________________________

ii. Heterozygous female: ________________________

b. What are the phenotypes and phenotypic proportions for the progeny of the cross?

c. Can a red and white male and a red and white female produce a mahogany and white female progeny? If so, state the genotypes of each parent, the genotype(s) of the red and white female progeny and state the probability of having a red and white female progeny.
