Population Demographics

For this lab, we are going to use data from the CIA World Factbook, a compilation of data for countries around the world. The CIA hosts a wide variety of data about all the countries of the world in tabular form. However, the data can be visualized using the tabular data attached to countries hosted by kmlfactbook.org. For this lab, all of your data has been provided in the lab folder, however it might be interesting to you to visit kmlfactbook.org to view what kind of information is available.

We will be using world population data collected by the CIA for the year 2008. These data are estimates and not absolute. Start by loading the Population 2008.kmz into Google Earth. The countries are all colored using a yellow-to-red color ramp, with red indicating the highest values and yellow indicating the lowest values. Clicking on an individual country will cause a popup to appear with information about that country. Use the population data to answer question 1.

1. Which two countries have the highest estimated 2014 populations, and what are their estimated populations (hint: click on the country to see population information)?

2. On what two continents are the highest 2014 "Total fertility rates" found?

3. Name one country that has a total fertility rate below the replacement rate.

4. How does "Life expectancy at birth (years): total population" compare between the U.S., Canada, and countries in Sub-Saharan Africa?

5. What is the "Median age (years): total" in the United States? In Japan? In Uganda? Why is the median age much lower in Uganda than in the United States?

6. Name one country that has a positive "Population growth rate (%)" and one country that has a negative population growth rate. What areas of the world have positive population growth rates, and what areas of the world have negative population growth rates?
