2. Dana, a 24-year-old patient who is 5 weeks pregnant with her first child, is visiting the office for a routine checkup. She says that birth defects are common in her family, and she is concerned about the possibility that her baby will have defects as well. What should you tell her?

3. Kathleen's husband has a brother who has phenylketonuria (PKU). They are anxious to start a family but are concerned about the possibility of having a child with PKU. Family members have indicated that it is a genetic disease that is inherited. Kathleen and her husband have decided to seek genetic counseling. What do you think the counselor might say?
