OBJECTIVE:

To provide and assist the students with the basic knowledge in the design, construction and services provisions for low rise domestic buildings. Factors considered when creating an acceptable living environment whilst appreciation the choice of materials.

OUTCOMES:

- Appreciate the main physical function requirements of buildings and describe the factors which must be considered when creating an acceptable living environment whilst appreciating the influence of the choice of materials and the selection of design features on building performance.

TASKS:

A & B Constructions Limited, incorporated in 1995 by a group of professionals, is now one of Oman's fastest growing construction conglomerates focused on creating nationally important infrastructure assets.

A & B Constructions' activity areas include turnkey responsibility for Urban Infrastructure (water, sanitation and sewerage, power/telecom transmission, towers and low rise buildings). It focused on delivering high quality work within budgeted time and costs, as evident in the various accolades

A & B Company is sincere in meeting the contractual requirements particularly with respect to quality and time bound completion. The sincerity of purpose comes across through clients' needs, since it hold client relations and satisfaction uppermost in the service oriented philosophy.

Key objectives are to emphasis on creating acceptable living environment by proper selection of materials on building performance and safety measures. The company has deputed YOU as (Design, Construction, Services and Health ) team head for designing the traditional low- rise domestic buildings by considering the function and performance requirements.

For designing the low rise building you are requested to consider the following tasks.
a. Proposal for case study
b. Draw simple plan for the low rise domestic building and justify the internal division of floor plan related to building function.
c. Analyse the factors that influence a building design for acceptable living environment with related to building performance.
d. Draw with simple sketches to show the difference between framed structure and masswall structure and justify your selection.
e. Identify the various functions of substructure, superstructure and secondary elements.
f. Describe the materials used in their construction and assess their load carrying abilities.

Report Format

1) The front cover of the report should have MEC logo and no page number should appear. It must be in printed form using the following margin spacing (see sample title form)
- Top: 1.0 inches
- Left: 1.5 inches
- Right: 1.0 inches
- Bottom: 1.0 inches

2) The report must be in black ink and is typed written in the English language using 12 points font of "Times New Roman ", on an A4 size standard paper.

3) The spacing of the lines must be 1.5 inches, using ‘justification' alignment for the running text , ‘center justification' for the chapter heading, and ‘left justification for the section heading/sub heading if any.

4) The font used for the chapter number and title is 18 points font; for the sections is 16 points font; and 14 points for sub sections if any.

5) The page number should be in the ‘footer' at the middle. The page number in the ‘List of Contents' where there is the ‘List of Tables', ‘List of Figures' must be in Roman numerals, (e.g. i, ii, ii,...) and all other pages must be assigned a running Arabic number (1,2,3,...) starting from 1.

6) The references must use the Harvard referencing format and arranged in the order of their appearance.

7) Every figure and table must have a figure number in an Arabic numeral (e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2, .... and Table 1, Table 2,...). The figure title is centered at bottom of figure. The table name is centered at the top of the table. Appendices are not required in this report.

Report Sections

The Report should contain a maximum of 20 pages with the following sections:
- Cover Page
- Table of contents
- Introduction
- Main body of the report
- Conclusions
- References

- ‘Table of Contents' must be in bold upper case size 16 points font in the middle of page (centered)


- ‘List of Figures', ‘List of Tables' (if any) must be in the upper case without bold and use Roman numerals to number the pages.
- All chapter topics should be written in upper case without bold.
- Subtopics written in each chapter should be numbered using Arabic numerals and indented one tab.
3. Introduction ( minimum of one page)
The introduction is the overview of the report content. It summarizes the overview of the topic and how the report is organized.

4. Main Body of the Report (minimum of Ten pages)
The following are the details in writing of the body of the essay:
- The headings are informative and descriptive.
- Discuss the conceptual framework of the essay topic.
- Expound or elaborate the concept by presenting sub -topics relevant to the main topic.
- All chapter topics should be written in upper case without bold.
- Subtopics written in each chapter should be numbered using Arabic numerals and indented one tab.
- All chapter numbers (Chapter 1,2,3...) should be in bold and in sentence case.

5. Conclusions ( minimum of one page)
A concluding statement regarding the subject matter of the design exercise will be included stating how this topic information has developed the student's knowledge and enhanced his/her experience in writing essay and its research process.

6. References (minimum 8 references)

Write the list of all the sources of information you have consulted incorporated in the report following the right format of listing them using the Harvard style referencing format of listing. All references listed can come from websites, journals, reference books magazines and etc.

GUIDELINES:
- This Assessment will be marked out of 100 marks.
- A student may be called for VIVA to discuss his work "if the instructor has a doubt regarding the source of the work (outsourced)".
- Student should submit a proposal for the CW assignment on Turnitin on or before 28th
March 2017.
- The maximum marks allotted for submission of proposal is 10 marks of this CW.
