Objectives

• Develop a robust and cost-effective vehicle movement detector based on the concept of Doppler radar.

• Construct a control circuit for supplying power to vehicle movement sensors and detection circuitry to measure the reflected signal.

• Integrate the sensors onto a single host microcontroller unit and simultaneously measure the response under vehicle movement.

• Host microcontroller to be programmed through a PC interconnect.

• Develop an LDR based environmental light detection system and integrate this with the microcontroller.

• Acquire light emitting diodes to represent street lights and manufacture small scale models.

• Develop a lighting control sequence based on real-time clock timer to keep track of time of day and night and to control the operation of the LEDs based on a toy car movement detection.

• Conduct a feasibility study into the implementation of a solar panel energy harvesting system that can be used to supply power to the LED based street light.

• Perform robust energy calculations to support the feasibility of such a system.

• Conduct a feasibility study into the implementation of a wind energy harvesting system that can be used to supply power to the LED based street light.

• Perform robust energy calculations to support the feasibility of such a system.

• Conduct a feasibility study of storing energy in lithium cells and transporting energy to the street light as and when necessary.

Minor Objectives

By the end of the project work, the following objectives shall be met,

• Develop a Doppler based vehicle movement detector system.

• Measure and quantify the range of the sensor that can be acquired from the constructed vehicle movement sensors by conducting some field trials.

• Develop an LDR sensor to determine the environmental lighting conditions.

• Write a basic algorithm that would incorporate and single vehicle movement detector and an LDR sensor to work simultaneously with a microcontroller unit.
