Noise Exposures - Factors Affecting Occupational Health

Various equipment and processes generate noise of varying intensity and - frequency. In this respect ventilation system, metal cutting machines, metal shaping plants, power generating units, compressed air and process steam are significant. The noise may cause hearing loss either when sudden or violent or long term and persistent. In both of the cases the injury is compensable.

However, it is established that if high frequency noise can cause hearing loss over a period of time, the low frequency noise will take little longer time to cause hearing loss. In circumstances where noise is likely to cause injury the workers have to wear snugly fitting ear plugs of rubber, wool or plastics. The muffs covering the complete ears may provide better protection. However, eliminating the source of noise or reducing its intensity must always be an option. Vibration that caused by machines could be a source of noise. Proper foundation to eliminate or decrease vibration could be one solution.
