Meiosis is duplication-division-division. Could a cell that underwent asexual reproduction by normal mitosis also undergo a variation of sexual reproduction, producing gametes by halving its chromosomal number by simply dividing once (without chromosomal duplication), rather than first duplicating and then dividing twice? Would this decrease the variation advantages of sex?
