Lab Report Rubric

Title (-1 point if missing)

-must be descriptive and accurate (what was the study about?)

Abstract (3 pts);

-brief summary of lab report (contains main points from each section in 250 words or less):

-Introduction (intro sentence, objective, hypothesis)

-Methods

-Results

-Conclusion (hypothesis supported, conclusion sentence)

Introduction (4 pts):

-provides any necessary background information (definition of terms, explaining concepts, etc)

(MUST CITE REFERENCES)

-statement of objective(s): what was the purpose of conducting this lab?

-hypothesis (with an explanation of why this was hypothesized)

Methods (3 pts):

-write out what you did in paragraph form

-must be past tense ("1Sml of solution X was added to the tube" NOT "Add 15m1 of solution X to the tube")

-don't use first person (I, we, etc)

-include enough detail that someone else can replicate the experiment

Results (4 pts):

-Paragraph form (2 pts): written explanation of results

-cite figures where appropriate; example: Higher enzyme concentrations caused lower reaction times (Figure 1).

-Figures (2 pts): graphs, tables, etc

-must include: figure captions (titles), labelled x- and y-axis (with units), key (if needed), on graphing paper or Excel

-must be neat and clear

Conclusion (4 pts):

-What were the main findings? -Do results support the hypothesis?

-Explain why you think you got the results you did (MUST CITE REFERENCES in proper in-text citation format)

-Are there sources of error that may have altered your results? How can they be improved?

-What future directions can be taken, based on your findings?

-Closing sentence summing up findings

References (2pts):

-Must be in proper format in references section:

last name, first name, last name, first name (continue with all authors). Year. Title. Journal name. Volume #: page-page.

Example:

Smith, J, Hilburn, A, Jones, 5, and Ralf, J. 2014. The effects of various carbohydrate sources on the glycemic response. Cell Biology. 123: 17-25.

-Must be cited in the body of your lab report in proper format: (Last name et al. Year) Example: Simple carbohydrates containing mono

- and disaccharides are absorbed more rapidly by the small intestine, therefore causing a faster rise in blood glucose (Smith et al. 2014)

-Must cite a minimum of two peer-reviewed scientific journal articles-- -•-• • -DO NOT USE DIRECT QUOTES when citing sources in the body of your report (in your own words)

-only cite literature in the Introduction and Discussion Dther considerations: -spelling and grammar

-clarity

-concise and succinct (use as few words as possible to convey the message; don't be repetitive and wordy) -12pt font, Times New Roman, double-spaced
