Brown fat, which is common in human infants, is specialized for the production of heat to keep the infant warm. Mitochondria in brown fat produce a protein known as thermogenin (UCP1) that associateswith the inner mitochondrial membrane and rapidly transports H+ from the intermembrane space back to the mitochondrial matrix, thus bypassing the ATP Synthase complex.
