• What would happen if a species within a population were suddenly split into 2 groups by an earthquake that creates a physical barrier like a canyon?

Part II:

• Purpose

o To find out what happens when a species within a population were split into two groups by a physical barrier.

• Introduction

o A population is a group of the same species in the same geographical area (Audesrick). When population is first divided into two groups they will not be able to reproduce unless they have the same physical and behavioral traits (Audesrick). The population is unable to interbreed if they are geographically isolated. In order for the species to reproduce they have to adapt to their environment. When divided by the barrier over many years there will be a difference in the biotic and abiotic conditions on either side of the barrier (Audesrick). When separated natural selection will cause different selective and adaptive pressures to occur between the divided population and they will evolve differently (Audesrick).

• Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome

o When divided by the physical barrier, over many years the species that was divided into two groups will be able to reproduce by reproductive isolation and speciation.

• Methods

o Time progression animations were used to show how a species divides into two groups and how they change over time. The animation shows the different between species and population and what happens when they are isolated from one another. A time line progression was used that started with initial separation and ended with speciation.

• Results/Outcome

o While going through the time progression and reading over the time line it is noticeable behavioral and physical traits must be the same or the species...ates a physical barrier like a canyon? Part II:
