Instructions: Answer each of the following questions. You may write by hand or type. However,

you are expected to present your work clearly and neatly. Bulleted responses are acceptable; you don't need to type a full report. Make sure to communicate which question you are answering.

Show your steps for any calculations to receive credit.

You may discuss the concepts with your colleagues. However, you are expected to perform this work on your own.

Lab 1: Orifice and Venturi Flow Meters:

Identify the independent and dependent variables in this experiment.

What method did we use to control each independent variable?

What method did we use to measure each independent variable?

What method did we use to measure each dependent variable?

Estimate the uncertainty in each measured (independent and dependent) variable.

Consider at least one systematic and one random error source.

Propagate the uncertainty in these measured variables through the computed results.

Was uncertainty in the measured variables the cause of the greater than unity venture discharge coefficient?

Lab 2: Pitot Static Probe:

Identify the independent and dependent variables in this experiment.

What method did we use to control each independent variable?

What method did we use to measure each independent variable?

What method did we use to measure each dependent variable?

Estimate the uncertainty in each measured (independent and dependent) variable.

Consider at least one systematic and one random error source.

Propagate the uncertainty in these measured variables through the computed results.

This lab provided two independent measurements that can be used to compute the flow velocity:

(1) the directly-measured dynamic pressure and

(2) the computed

difference between the total and static pressures. Compute and plot the velocity at each probe location using each method. Do the values agree within the uncertainty that you estimated? Discuss possible reasons that the values differ.

Lab 3: Flow Visualization in a Smoke Tunnel

Find streamline images of 3 objects (from books and/or the internet).

Identify separations and stagnation/dividing lines on each image.

Comment on the design of the object.

o What do the streamlines show you about the design of the object for its intended purpose?

o For example, the streamlines over the truck models during the lab showed the drag-reducing function of the fairing over the cab.

Be sure to cite the source of any image you copy.
