Imagine this scenario: The local government in your area has learned about the concept of an ecological footprint. It would like to know more about this measure and whether ecological footprints could help it to implement more environmentally friendly policies. As a respected member of the community who has a background in biology, you volunteer to conduct a scientifically grounded ecological footprint analysis of your household. You will then report back to the council with your analysis and general policy suggestions based on what you learned.

• Conduct independent research as needed

The city council has specifically asked you to address these subjects:

• Explain the ecological footprint. What does it measure?

• Explain how the ecological footprint of your household differs from the national average.

• Describe two or more actions that would improve the footprint of your household.

• Advocate for one policy that would improve the footprint of your community, state, or country. Describe and explain the advantages and costs associated with your recommended policy.
