Hydrocele

A hydrocele is a painless water-filled cyst found in front of the testis. It is brightly translucent and cannot be emptied by pressure of a 'flap valve' at its junction with the processus vaginals. The testis within it can usually be felt with ease or, when the hydrocele is tense. its shadow can be demonstrated by transillumination. A hydrocele results from excessive accumulation of normal fluid within the tunica vaginalis due to ever production of fluid caused by inflammation of the testis and its appcndages, or abdominal cavity through a patent processus vaginalis.

Wydroceles in infants do not require surgery and all the fluid will have disappeared by the age of 1 year. In older children it may causes discomfort and affect the behaviour of the child. Surgery will then be necessary. The processus is divided at the internal inguinal ring as for an inguinal hernia.
